Season Safety Upgrading of Nelson Mandela Boulevard (NMB) in Thembalethu.

Construction work on the upgrade to Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Thembalethu  commenced on 1 September 2017 with this carriageway forming the principal transportation route from the residential area of Thembalethu to the remainder of the George Central Business District (CBD) and the condition of the existing carriageway is inadequate for the future growth requirements of the area. George Municipality’s objectives are to ensure that members of the Thembalethu community can use safe, affordable and reliable public transport to access social, economic and employment opportunities in the future.

.  This project which is currently under construction consists of the following improvements to the existing carriageway:

•             An upgrade of the roadways vehicle carrying capacity and improved safety and security for all road users and pedestrians.

•             The upgraded roadway will include new cycle lanes, wider walkways with dignified spaces, upgraded street lighting and improved surface water drainage.

The construction site will be closing on 15 December 2017 -  with a portion of the roadway remaining closed for the safety of all road users - and work will again commence on 08 January 2018. George Municipality wishes to caution all road users to approach the construction site over the festive period with caution and to take special care for the safety and convenience of the travelling public. A maintenance team will be available over this period to ensure that the temporary road signs and speed controls are maintained and are effective, and that the site remains safe at all times. The municipality and the construction company  wishes all the residents of Thembalethu a blessed festive season and would like to thank the public for their patience and positive cooperation to date on this project. All traffic and safety related enquiries can be directed to Mr. Simon Adams at 071 2100303.
