National Treasury visits George Municipality

Members of National Treasury visited the George Municipality in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (MFMA, Act No. 56 of 2003). According to the Act the Accounting Officer of a Municipality must assess the Municipality's performance for the first six months of the financial year by 25th January of each year. This assessment directly impacts the municipality's adjustments budget preparations as prescribed by the Act. This year the mid-year engagements focused on the review of the most recent audit outcomes, assessment of 2016/17 financial year performance as at mid-year and Budget preparations for the 2017/18 budget compilation. From left at the meeting are Keith Jordaan, Chief Financial Officer of George Municipality, Templeton Phogole, Director: Local Government Analysis at National Treasury, Vuyo MbungeDirector: Local Government Analysis at National Treasury and Harold Basson, Director: Civil Engineering Services at George Municipality. At the back are Cllr. Stag Cronje, Portfolio Councillor for Finance, Steyn van der Merwe (Electrotechnical Services), Moos Cupido, Deputy Director: Finance and Leon Wallace, Deputy Director: Finance. Members of National Treasury were also taken on a bus ride to George Municipality’s grant funded projects. They visited the Outeniqua Waste Water Treatment Works, the electricity project at Erf 325, Pacaltsdorp, the Thembalethu Nelson Mandela Boulevard upgrade, the Denneoord Water reservoir and discussed future electricity usage and bulk infrastructure while en route through the City.
