The Executive Mayor of George, Ald Melvin Naik, hosted Progress Rugby Club last week at a congratulatory event after their SWD Premier League Cup win.Naik congratulated the team on a well-deserved win and said their task of representing the whole of George and SWD is a big load on their shoulders. He asked the team and the management to stay focused on their next big goal, which is the Gold Cup, a National Club competition. The Mayor wished them well in the upcoming competition.
Mayor Naik entertained the players with the excellent songstress Faith Ndukwana, a singer/songwriter who the Mayor had heard singing previously at a George Municipal event. The Mayor and Cllr Peter Louw, Ward Councillor for Ward 5, the home of Progress, donated a cheque of appreciation to the rugby club. Mr Randal Geduld, President of the Club, thanked the Mayor and Council for honouring the club and promised to do their utmost best in the coming competition. Mr Vincent Moos, Head Coach of the team, said they started the season full of bravado and then lost their first match against Pacaltsdorp. “We prayed and realised we will not be able to make it alone. We put God first and use sport as a tool to expand the Kingdom of God.”
