The fourth annual George Madibaz Fun Run 2016, held in honour of Nelson Mandela, took place on Saturday with over 300 athletes enjoying the sunshine.
In 2013 the Madiba Long Walk to Freedom fun event was held on 18 July starting at Unity Park. In 2014 the “year of Honouring Nelson Mandela” was announced by the Executive Mayor of George and the 18th July event grew to a 5km Run/walk and now in 2016 it includes a 21.1km run/walk; a 10km run/walk and a 5km fun run with more athletes participating every year.
The event is sponsored by the George Municipality and co-hosted under the rules of ASA (Athletics South Africa) and ASWD (Athletics South Western District). The Executive Mayor of George, Charles Standers started all three races and was aided by the GO GEORGE mascot who made a brief appearance to wish all runners good luck.
Olympic Athlete Anèl Oosthuizen who will represent South African and George in Rio 2016, participated in the 10km event.
