Inviting all ‘patat’ lovers to Pacaltsdorp

Inviting all ‘patat’ lovers to Pacaltsdorp

Excitement is mounting as Pacaltsdorp will soon host a community competition in search of the tastiest and most creative sweet potato or ‘patat’ recipe in the Southern Cape.

Entrants are invited to submit their recipes featuring sweet potatoes either as an appetizer, soup, main course or dessert at a fun day to be held on Wednesday 27 December in the parking area of the Pacaltsdorp Traffic Department, Mission Street from 12h00.

Sponsored by George Tourism, the “Patat Recipe Competition” will be held before  the annual Pacaltsdorp Night Run (at 18h00) which this year will include well-known local athletic champions, Elroy Gelant and Anel Oosthuizen, who both took part in the 2016 Olympic Games.

“The sweet potato recipe competition is open to amateurs over the age of 18, and entries will be judged according to taste, creativity and preparation.  Each recipe must include at least two cups of fresh sweet potatoes and must be prepared on an open fire,” said Melanie Martins, George Tourism Official.

Prizes include a Webber Compact Kettle Grill, a Discovery 3m x3m Gazebo, a Campmaster Potjie, and two Campmaster chairs. The judges are Councilor Charlotte Clark, Francois Ferreira and Elrico Appolis. Closing date for entries is 22 December.

Sweet potatoes feature strongly in Pacaltsdorp’s rich cultural history with the  area  renowned for the ‘six months’ patat, a tasty cultivar which takes half a year to ripen in the ground.

Opposite the historic Congregation Church in Mission Street is the famous ‘Patat Huisie’, a well preserved example of Georgian architecture, where the founder of Pacaltsdorp, Reverend Carl August Pacalt lived from 1813 to 1818. It was in this quaint mission cottage, with its sod walls, thatch roof and cow-dung floor, that John Anderson stored his ‘six months’ sweet potatoes.

For more details on the ‘patat’ competition, please contact Melanie on 044 801 9299 or e-mail her on mmartins@george.gov.za.    Entry forms available at the Pacaltsdorp  and George Tourism Offices.

The Pacaltsdorp Night Run will kick off at 18h00 on the 27th. All participants are asked to wear white T-shirts. Entry fees are R50 for 8km, R30 for 4 km and R20 for 2km.  For more information, please contact Sidwell October at 078 395 8489. Plenty of entertainment will be provided with a jumping castle, Riel dance performances, as well as arts and crafts and food stalls.
