Illegal Connections - high price to pay

Illegal Connections  - high price to pay
An individual attempting an illegal connection on Saturday 4th August not only caused a power outage in New Dawn Park, but was also subsequently shocked and died on the scene.

The man who hooked a piece of standard wire over an 11KV  bare overhead line had run the wire across a ravine from New Dawn Park, Pacaltsdorp
to informal settlement, All Bricks in Thembalethu.   The bare wires ran knee high through an area which is often used as a play area by children. George Municipality strongly condemns such illegal connections as they not only pose a risk to the life of the person attempting the connection  but also are of extreme danger to any child, adult or animal that could have walked into the area.

Furthermore the illegal connections draw more electricity from the network than anticipated, which causes power failures and inconveniences to law abiding paying customers. Communities must be alert to the basics of safe electricity usage and the risks associated with electricity theft, meter tampering, bypassing and illegal connections. Report all tampering or electricity theft to George Electro-Technical Offices during work hours 044 8019222 and after hours 044 8016300.

A full investigation will be carried out in regard to this incident.  The direct costs to the municipality for repairing damage caused by such incidents amounts to approximately R10 000.
