George Municipality will not be placed under Administration

Media Statement

Media Statement: Issued on behalf of George Municipality, 22nd May 2018

Further to reports in the media last week George Municipality would like to clarify that the municipality is not being placed under administration. Minister Donald Grant, Acting Western Cape Minister of Local Government has issued the following statement on Friday 18th May 2018 confirming as such:

I confirm the current position on behalf of the Western Cape Government.  At this stage not one of George, Bitou or Laingsburg Municipality is under administration or being placed under administration.  Minister Bredell indicated last week in the WCPP on the 10th May, Section 106 interventions are being implemented in George.

Please note the following:

  1. Implementing Section 106 DOES NOT mean a Council is being placed under administration. One of the final measures and tools that form part of Section 106 includes placing a Council under administration in terms of S139 of the Constitution, but this is not always automatically the case. It is always the last resort when all other measures have failed.

  2.  We do not want to see any Council placed under administration because that could impact service delivery, but we will not hesitate to do so if it comes down to it. I trust that this clarifies the matter.

    Donald Grant
Acting Western Cape Minister of Local Government
