FUNDA MZANTSI CHAMPIONSHIP 01 – 05 OCTOBER 2018 GEORGE, WESTERN CAPE13 September 2018 - 06 October 2018
The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) through its outreach unit, Centre for the Book (CFB) started the Funda Mzantsi project to support and assist communities to establish and sustain book clubs. The project was started as part of the CFB’s mandate to inculcate a culture of reading amongst South Africans. The project was launched as pilot in the Western Cape focusing on high school learners. The project started with only six book clubs in high schools around Cape Town. CFB donated books to the identified schools and learners were encouraged to read and discuss books as part of their book club programmes.
In 2010 the Centre for the Book took a step further by introducing the Funda Mzantsi Championship to assess book club members’ reading and comprehension abilities. The Funda Mzantsi Championship is a reading competition where all Centre for the Book affiliated book clubs compete against each other. Winners of the competition take home medals and trophies.
In 2013 the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), upon realising the role played by the NLSA’s CFB in the rehabilitation of their offenders and growing interest by their Centres, decided to join hands with the CFB. Very successful 5th and 6th Funda Mzantsi Championships took place in George and were run over three days. The Championships attracted more than thirty book clubs and were attended by more than two thousand five hundred (2 500) spectators from all over the country. Once again, the NLSA’s Centre for the Book in partnership with the DCS and the George Municipality will host the Funda Mzantsi Championship in George, Western Cape from 01 to 05 October 2018 with a record 100 book clubs having entered.
