George Municipality has made it possible for customers to feed excess electricity, generated from Small Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG), back to the municipal electrical grid. SSEG refers to decentralised renewable power generating plants under 1MW located on residential, commercial or industrial sites. SSEG systems are connected to the wiring on the customer’s premises which is in turn connected to, and supplied by, the municipal electrical grid – thus these generators are ‘embedded’ in the municipal electrical grid.
Mr Steyn van der Merwe, Acting Director: Electrotechnical Services, says the municipality wants to create a sustainable George and therefore supports and assist owners embarking on renewable energy projects. However, it is extremely important that all installations are registered at the Municipality and that they comply with norms and standards to ensure the safety of the public as well as staff working on the electrical network.
Solar Photovoltaic panels (PV), normally mounted on the roof of a residential, commercial or industrial building, is one of the possible SSEG plant types that can be owned and operated by private owners from their erven. Other SSEG types are wind turbines, and biomass plants.
Typically, excess energy from PV installations will be generated during the day when the sun is shining, with the customer consuming electricity from the grid in the mornings and evenings. At the end of the month each SSEG customer’s account gets reconciled between energy supplied and energy used, with any credit on the account being reset, keeping the customer a net-consumer of energy. Van der Merwe says consumers will thus not be able to sell back power to the Municipality and generate an income from their installation, but can reduce their monthly electricity bill.
Customers wishing to install Small Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) at their homes or business and make use of the relevant tariff can contact the Electrotechnical Services Directorate on ??????? to obtain the relevant application forms.
The commissioning and installation documentation must be submitted to Electro-Technical Services Department, and an inspection will be arranged. All installations must be signed off by a Professional Engineer, at the cost of the customer, to ensure that the installation is completed in accordance with the relevant standards and regulations. If the installation meets the set standards and specifications, approval will be granted to connect to the electrical grid and generation can commence.
