Water supply problems have been experienced from Friday of last week to the upper Blanco area. Although municipal teams were working on the problem non-stop, the problems have persisted until Thursday 14 July 2016. Further complications were caused by two pipe bursts on Wednesday evening in Blanco.
The result of these bursts was that a larger area of Blanco was affected. The pipe bursts also affected the filling of the Golden Valley reservoirs and the upper (ESKOM) reservoir. Water trucks from both George and Eden District Municipality have continued filling the upper reservoir throughout the night.
Four civil engineering teams worked on repairing the burst pipes through the night and all repairs were completed by Thursday morning.
Both pumps at the lower (Golden Valley) reservoir malfunctioned on Wednesday night. One was fully repaired within hours by municipal staff. Municipal technicians dismantled the second pump on the same evening and the pump is presently being repaired and will be back in operation before this evening. The small pump which feeds the farming community from the upper (ESKOM) reservoir also malfunctioned on Wednesday but is repaired and full functional.
At present the George Civil Engineering Department is not aware of any consumers who do not have water at all. Work continues on stabilizing the network. The water pressure might be affected until all the reservoirs have been filled to capacity.
The George municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused by this event. An event like this again emphasises the importance of water as a basic service. The civil engineering department is already busy with contingency plans to endeavour to limit the re-occurrence of such an event and/or to reduce the risks of a re-occurrence.
Pipe bursts are unfortunately a reality of a water system and the municipality are fortunate to have standby teams in place on a 24 hour basis to attend to such emergencies. The Executive Mayor wishes to thank those staff who have worked right through the night to repair the infrastructure involved.
The public of Blanco is thanked for their patience in this regard and requested to continue to use water sparingly to enable the system to stabilize as quickly as possible.
