The old adage of - you are only as old as you feel - was once again proven true on Saturday 2nd April at an event hosted by the Executive Mayor, Charles Standers held to honour Senior citizens of George. Representatives of eleven senior citizen groups from all over George were invited to attend a breakfast at Parkdene Primary School.
A full program of entertainment for the morning included sterling performances by opera singer Johan Prinsloo with special guest speaker, the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz thanking the seniors for their contributions over the years.
Alderman Standers handed over cheques to the value of R10 000 to a representative of each senior citizen group.
Following breakfast the group of over 100 senior citizens proudly marched with banners and posters down Main Street and then took part in sport activities including a 50 m Funwalk and an Egg and spoon race. The laughter and excitement was tangible and said Ald. Standers “It is such a pleasure to host such an event where everything that is done is so highly appreciated and enjoyed by the participants. We are proud of the energy of our Senior Citizens and continue to value the high calibre of contribution they make to society.”
